A king mattress is the same length as a queen but about 16 inches wider, so the real question is whether your room has space for that extra width. For many couples in a typical GTA bedroom, a queen leaves more room to move around. A king makes sense when the room is large and you want the most sleeping space.

Queen vs king at a glance
| Queen | King | |
|---|---|---|
| Standard mattress size in Canada | 60″ × 80″ | 76″ × 80″ |
| Width per person (2 sleepers) | About 30″ | About 38″ |
| Good fit for | Most couples, smaller main bedrooms, guest rooms | Large main bedrooms, couples who want more space |
Mattress sizes can vary slightly by manufacturer. Our guide to mattress sizes in Canada covers every size from single to king.
The bed frame is bigger than the mattress
This is the part people often forget. A bed frame, especially one with a headboard or upholstered sides, is longer and wider than the mattress. Here's one real example, the Platform Bed – Espresso (IF 5345), as listed by the manufacturer:
- Queen: 82″ L × 62″ W × 12″ H
- King: 82″ L × 80″ W × 12″ H
That's a low-profile platform bed. Beds with large headboards can be bigger. The Austin 'Olivia' bedroom set, for example, lists its queen bed at 84″ L × 63″ W and its king bed at 84″ L × 78″ W. Always use the bed dimensions on the product page, not just the mattress size, when you measure.
How much room do you need?
A common guideline is to leave about 24 to 30 inches of walking space on the sides of the bed you use and at the foot of the bed. You also need room for nightstands, a dresser with its drawers open, and doors and closets that swing open.
A simple way to check:
- Measure your room wall to wall.
- Subtract the bed frame width (from the product page).
- See what's left for walking space and nightstands on each side.
- Mark the bed's outline on the floor with painter's tape and walk around it.
Don't forget the delivery path. A king bed comes in more pieces than a mattress, but a king mattress is wide and needs to get through doors, hallways and elevators. See how to measure before your furniture delivery.

Quick answers
How much wider is a king than a queen?
A standard king mattress is about 76″ wide and a queen is about 60″ wide, so a king is about 16″ wider. Both are about 80″ long.
Can I put a king mattress on a queen bed?
No. The mattress needs a frame or base of the same size.
Is a king bed worth the extra cost?
It depends on your room and how many people share the bed. If the room fits it comfortably and you want more space, many people find it worthwhile. If space is tight, a queen is usually the more practical choice.
Do queen and king beds have the same delivery cost?
Yes. Delivery is free to every address in our service area, with no minimum order, and usually arrives within 7 business days.
