Will It Fit? How to Measure Before Your Furniture Delivery

Most delivery problems happen because a sofa or bed doesn't fit through a doorway or up a staircase. A few minutes with a tape measure before you order saves a lot of trouble.

1. Measure the item

Find the width, depth and height on the product page. For sectionals, check the size of each piece, not just the full assembled size.

2. Measure the way in

  • Doorways: width and height of every door on the way to the room.
  • Hallways: width, and any tight corners you have to turn.
  • Stairs: width, ceiling height above the stairs, and any turns or landings.
  • Elevators: door width and the inside height, width and depth.

Leave extra room for turning corners on stairs and in hallways.

3. Measure the room

Mark the item's size on the floor with painter's tape to see how much space it takes and where you can walk around it.

4. Condos and apartments

Check whether your building needs you to book the elevator for your delivery day, and book it if so.
